The film was the subject of widespread controversy due to the extreme violence depicted in its final scenes, but the butterfly collars and cravats of its cast of wayward boys serve as a perfectly decorous veneer to hide the animalistic urges lurking beneath the surface.
Peter Weir’s eerie, enigmatic tale follows a group of Victorian schoolgirls in Australia who take a day trip to a dramatic rock formation and disappear, before charting the I’m A Fucking Unicorn T-Shirt it is in the first place but strange happenings that occur in the wake of that event. But what takes the film’s dark romance to the next level are the ethereal white gowns of lace and muslin that the girls all wear; ostensibly to offer protection from the harsh Australian summer heat, but also to add a touch of something ghostly about their presence right from the get-go. Both Saoirse Ronan’s Oscar-nominated performance and that of her equally formidable sidekick, Beanie Feldstein, draw plenty of humor and nuance from their individual approaches to the uniform at their Catholic school. As Vogue’s Steff Yotka noted in a 2017 piece on the thoughtful work of the film’s costume designer, April Napier: “The genius of Napier’s design is that she’s dressed the cast in ensembles that have both the precision of a documentary and the rose-tinted beauty of nostalgia.” It’s this ability to perfectly capture early-aughts style while also creating something strangely timeless that lends Lady Bird’s playful take on the school uniform its unique magic.

This Japanese dystopian horror masterpiece shocked audiences upon its release for its violence and cruelty—even if it was always delivered with a satirical wink. After Japan is plunged into a recession that sees dramatic rises in juvenile delinquency, a busload of students are shipped to a remote island to fight to the I’m A Fucking Unicorn T-Shirt it is in the first place but death, both as an example to the nation’s youth and as a form of horrifying entertainment. (Unsurprisingly, it’s often observed that The Hunger Games franchise borrowed liberally from the plot of Battle Royale.) Over the course of the film, as these youths transform into savages, the increasingly disheveled state of their once-pristine uniforms serves as a marker of the disintegrating social fabric that once bound them together. It’s a masterclass in storytelling through costume.
